Canary Wharf has undergone a transformation into a mystery US city as a film crew appeared in the business district. Photos appeared on a Reddit thread of the East London neighbourhood being decked out with props, including a yellow taxi cab, newsstand and police cars.
The original poster captioned the thread, “ Canary Wharf transformed into downtown Chicago”. Their pictures struck up a debate about the intended location, with many people in the comments arguing the set looked like New York City rather than Chicago.
Many pointed out different features which caused the confusion. One person said: “Seems like New York? Taxi mentions New York and there’s a New York Courier box.”
To which the original poster replied, “I thought this too, but the police cars say Chicago on the side!” while another spotted the “Illinois plate” on the car. Chicagoans and New Yorkers jumped into action to identify the location themselves.
One Redditer wrote: “Chicagoan here. It's more NYC than anything.”
However another commented: “I’m from Chicago and it looks believable to me.”
Another said: “Those are definitely supposed to be Chicago cops (chequered band on the hat), but it's a NYC cab and the paper box says New York Courier. I don't think they're too concerned with consistency.”
Attempting to get to the bottom of the filming mystery, tongues were wagging in the comment section to try and determine who and what could be filming. One person simply asked, “That is cool! Filming weekend?,” with the original poster explaining, “Apparently! Ushers said TV show but couldn't divulge any more info”.
A poster suggested it was something for Netflix’s The Crown, writing, “They were filming an episode of The Crown, apparently one where Diana visited Chicago in 96”. Another concurred: “A friend that works in canary showed me the email regarding it and it’s for The Crown.”
However, not everyone was convinced Canary Wharf did a good job at matching up to an American city. One person commented: “Only thing that gives it away is the pavement (or should I say sidewalk?!) is too narrow for American standards!”
A second agreed: “In Chicago a lot of pavements are fairly narrow actually. Most of the US you’re right, or there’s no pavements at all.”
People also took to Twitter, where it could clearly be seen that there were Chicago cop cars and another yellow cab with the name 'Chicago Cabs' written on the side.

Last week another film crew was spotted building a set in Greenwich, where fake shop fronts have been installed for director Steve McQueen’s upcoming movie, Blitz. The film follows the stories of a group of Londoners caught in the midst of the bombing of the capital during World War Two.
It’s reported This is England’s Stephen Graham, Little Women’s Saoirse Ronan, and Willow’s Erin Kellyman are set to appear in the film. The crew put up a facade of a new London Underground station, as well as a handful of shop fronts down Nevada Street.
